New Features, New Audiences, New Participants
|
|

Dear Partners and Friends of Global Talent Mentoring,
|
We hope you are having a productive 2023.
|
Since our last newsletter from September 2022, Global Talent Mentoring has continued to evolve. Among other things, we introduced a major new collaboration area on the members-only platform and kicked off a series of STEMM-focused online get-togethers for members.
|
We also recently had several opportunities to tell diverse audiences around the world about Global Talent Mentoring.
|
- On 24–25 February, Global Talent Mentoring participated in the annual conference of the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA) in Córdoba, Spain, which brought together hundreds of research scientists from across Europe. The MCAA has over 20,000 members in more than 150 countries and is a key player in the European science talent development pipeline.
- On 28 February, Global Talent Mentoring participated in the Global Forum for Innovation in Education in Dubai. The one-day scientific conference was convened to celebrate the achievements of the Hamdan Foundation as a driving force of global education reform since its founding 25 years ago (for example, its cooperation with UNESCO). At the conference, we had the chance to feature Global Talent Mentoring as a scientifically cutting-edge means of supporting outstanding youths as they develop their talents.
- On 5 March, we held a keynote lecture for a conference of the European Council for High Ability (ECHA) that took place in Haifa, Israel. The ECHA is a global champion of evidence-based talent development and gifted education.
Our multinational program staff is busy—and very excited about—preparing to welcome a new cohort of mentees and mentors into the program this spring.

New Collaboration Area
|
|
Global Talent Mentoring facilitates one-on-one mentoring, collaboration, and networking. Research indicates that combining these interaction forms increases positive outcomes in mentoring programs.
|
|
|
|
|
|
In October, we went live with a dedicated area for collaborations. Participants can initiate STEMM projects with all other mentees and mentors. The new Collaboration area simulates the life cycle of real-world research and grant-writing processes and guides the participants step by step through a collaboration, from conceptual ideation to final presentation of an end product.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Building a Global Talent Mentoring Community, One Event at a Time
|
|
To encourage community building and networking, Global Talent Mentoring provides participants with regular online events.
|
|
|
|
|
|
In late 2022, for example, Global Talent Mentoring held an online year-end gathering for all participants. Members joined a virtual event on the platform and shared with one another their highlights from 2022. Participants shared the many opportunities they had in 2022 for learning and personal growth.
|
|
|
|
Mentees described participating in exciting extracurricular activities and competitions in STEMM fields, doing internships at prestigious STEMM institutions, designing innovative applications, and continuing to acquire advanced STEMM knowledge and skills. Likewise, mentors reflected on how mentoring with Global Talent Mentoring in 2022 was meaningful for them. Some mentors described the enjoyment they found in learning from their mentees about different cultures, while others were inspired by mentees’ creative questions and ideas. The inspiring stories and experiences motivated mentees and mentors to continue excellent work in mentoring and brought them closer together as a community of like-minded individuals.

To provide our participants with more opportunities to network and exchange their ideas in the Global Talent Mentoring community, we are organizing a series of theme-based community events for 2023. The regular events give participants the chance to hear about other participants’ amazing experiences, be inspired, start collaborations, and strengthen bonds between members of the Global Talent Mentoring community.

Effective Mentoring and STEMM Talent Development
|
|
The science of talent development in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medical sciences (STEMM) is growing globally. However, not all efforts yield robust, long-term benefits for involved stakeholders.
|
|
|
|
|
The Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA), an international non-profit association supported by the European Commission, has been providing support for researchers, project supervisors, and project coordinators for more than a decade. With over twenty thousand members from more than 150 countries, MCAA is leading a global network of scientists facilitating sharing, collaboration, and talent development among scientists. Global Talent Mentoring is honored to have a committed partnership with MCAA.

In their annual conference in Córdoba, Spain, on 24–25 February, MCAA gathered hundreds of advanced researchers and entrepreneurs in science together to meet and discuss the current challenges in science diplomacy and sustainable development. MCAA also invited Global Talent Mentoring to introduce the program to this exceptional and knowledgeable community. During the two-day event, we had a chance to present the benefits of scientifically sound, online mentoring for talent development, engage in thought-provoking conversations about effective talent-development methods in STEMM, and welcome new dedicated experts as mentor volunteers to the program. Global Talent Mentoring Participates in the Global Forum for Innovation in Education, Celebrating 25 Years of Global Education Innovation
|
|
The Hamdan Foundation, owner and champion of Global Talent Mentoring, celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary with an international research conference in Dubai on 28 February 2023. In addition to highlighting the Foundation’s outstanding accomplishments as a dynamo of systematic improvement in the education sector, the aim of the Global Forum was to bring together experts and specialists in the fields of educational excellence, giftedness, and innovation from around the world to discuss educational challenges and opportunities. The Hamdan Foundation also showcased its current and future educational projects and initiatives. Moreover, the Hamdan Foundation announced a new collaboration with UNESCO.

The Hamdan Foundation dedicated one session to highlighting the Global Talent Mentoring program and discussing its role in talent development. Prof. Dr. Heidrun Stoeger, co-director of Global Talent Mentoring, introduced the attendees to the science of effective mentoring for achieving eminence and innovation in STEMM and, as a case in point, to Global Talent Mentoring.

|
Prof. Dr. Stoeger’s presentation was followed by a Q&A session with the participants and brief presentations by the two mentees, both of whom were accepted by Harvard University to complete their undergraduate degrees. The mentees described their ongoing scientific studies and their development as future STEMM experts and the role Global Talent Mentoring plays in their talent development.

Global Talent Mentoring Directors Explore Effective Online Mentoring in STEMM at ECHA 2023
|
|
The European Council for High Ability (ECHA) held its third thematic online conference from 5–7 March 2023. Through promoting research, development, and education in the field of high ability, the ECHA aims to advance the study and development of potential for excellence. Gordon College of Education in Haifa, Israel, one of the oldest teacher training colleges in Israel, hosted the conference, which focused on the topic of teaching highly able students.

Global Talent Mentoring directors Prof. Dr. Heidrun Stoeger and Prof. Drs. Albert Ziegler were among the keynote speakers. In their joint keynote, they introduced Global Talent Mentoring, described its accompanying research, and shared participants’ success stories. They also highlighted the benefits of online mentoring for talented youths and young adults from around the world as well as for mentors.
