Welcome to the fifth issue of The Hub! I hope 2021 is off to a good and healthy start for you. On 27 January, we sent out acceptance emails to more than 120 outstanding mentees, who were selected from among more than 500 nominees. We will commence our pilot round of mentoring in March. We invite you to read more about our careful (and exciting!) review processes below. Also featured in this newsletter are Advanced Material Pandemic and Future Preparedness Taskforce (AMPT), one of our outstanding partners based in the United States, and Dr. Anna Bárbara de Freitas Carneiro-Proietti, a hematology expert based in Brazil and one of our distinguished mentors. Finally, we would like to highlight our social media communications, where we keep you up to date on our most recent developments and more.

Mentee–Mentor Matching is Underway—and We Need Additional Mentors!
The commencement of mentoring is just around the corner! Since our last newsletter in October, more than 120 young talents from five continents have been selected to participate as mentees, and more than 270 STEMM experts from all over the world have registered as mentors. To get us one step closer to the start of mentoring in March, our research team has thoroughly reviewed the profiles of each selected mentee and every registered STEMM expert so we can make excellent mentee–mentor matches.
Our mentees are truly amazing, and their STEMM interests are incredibly diverse. For some of our mentees’ very specific interests, we are still in need of additional STEMM experts to become mentors. We already have an impressive roster of mentor volunteers, but we seek additional experts to expand our pool of willing mentors in some areas. Therefore, we kindly ask you to reach out to your networks to help us find great mentors for our remaining unmatched mentees!

AMPT: Equipping the Global Community to Tackle Future Challenges Together
|
|
|
|
New Global Talent Mentoring partner Advanced Material Pandemic and Future Preparedness Taskforce (AMPT) is an independent, international public-benefit organization committed to facilitating the global use of advanced materials to solve some of humanity’s most immediate challenges and emerging needs. Headquartered in the United States and led by Vanderbilt University alumna Dr. Zina Jarrahi Cinker, AMPT was founded in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but with a longer-term mission to facilitate international cross-discipline collaboration to use material science at the service of society and humanity. Through the use of advanced materials, AMPT aims to proactively solve pressing global problems by aligning the knowledge and actions of leaders from across the globe representing academia, industry, and policy-making organizations.

Global Talent Mentoring and AMPT are partnering to help realize the shared goals of solving some of humanity’s most pressing challenges and advancing the global talent pipeline in STEMM—particularly in areas where STEMM talent development resources might be limited. Within this context, AMPT has committed to helping identify STEMM experts from across the globe in order to enable exceptionally talented youth in the Global South to participate in Global Talent Mentoring as mentees. Such partnerships enable Global Talent Mentoring to expand its international network of STEMM talent, as well as broaden the reach of the positive impact it makes in the lives of outstanding youths in STEMM.

Interview with Mentor and Distinguished Researcher Dr. Anna Bárbara de Freitas Carneiro-Proietti

Dr. Anna Bárbara de Freitas Carneiro-Proietti (MD, PhD) is a leading hematologist, virologist, and psychoanalyst in Brazil. A woman of many talents, she conducts cutting-edge research in the areas of blood transfusions and blood-related diseases, such as Sickle Cell Disease and HIV. She currently does collaborative research work that brings together diverse research centers in Brazil and partners with the National Institutes of Health and Vitalant Research Institute, both located in the United States. Dr. Carneiro-Proietti is also one of our distinguished mentors. She recently took time to chat with Global Talent Mentoring engagement specialist Christin Graml about the path that led her to her career as a hematologist, as well as share a bit about her experience as a woman in science.

Global Talent Mentoring is excited to have an experienced mentor such as yourself on board! Why do you enjoy being a mentor?
|
|
“I like to network and make things happen for people. I like helping people find their way, their passion, and where their strengths really lie. Helping people, listening to them, and giving advice come very naturally to me. One aspect I really like about my research work is that we interact with many, many students. They help us with the research and we guide them early on in their careers. It’s great that we are able to support these students. Many medical students have told me that they studied hematology because of me. This makes me very happy. The most important thing in life is to find something you like. For me, this makes what I do professionally a pleasure, not work.”

As a woman in STEMM, do you think it’s important to have a female mentor?
|
“Yes, I think it’s very important to have a female role model. Having a female figure like this in your life shows girls, especially the younger ones, that they have something to aspire to. If a girl sees a woman in STEMM, then she thinks she can do this, too. If a girl only has male role models, perhaps it’s not so clear that she’ll be able to make it. But as women see more and more women going into STEMM fields, they see that it’s possible.”
